In the quiet coastal Sitio Milaor of Barangay Poblacion, Torrijos, Marinduque, the sun rises over calm waters where a young boy has spent countless mornings perfecting every stroke. Jasper Fidelino, 14, a Grade 9 student at Poctoy National High School, is not just the eldest of two siblings… he is a determined young swimmer whose discipline and dreams shine as brightly as the medals he brings home.
The son of a fisherman, Jasper’s introduction to the water came naturally. From a young age, he learned to navigate the waves near his home, unaware that these early experiences were shaping him for bigger challenges. His formal swimming journey began in Grade 6, a path demanding hours of weekend training, from six in the morning until four in the afternoon, repeating drills until every movement became second nature.
“Nakakapagod, pero masaya po ako (It’s tiring, but I’m happy),” Jasper says with quiet pride, recalling the long hours he dedicated to mastering his craft.
His dedication quickly bore fruit as he steadily collected medal after medal, culminating in an impressive performance at the Provincial Meet in 2025, where he brought home three gold and three silver medals. This success earned him the honor of representing Marinduque at the MIMAROPA Regional Athletic Association, with eyes set on the Palarong Pambansa.
Yet, it is not just his medals that earn admiration. Jasper exemplifies humility and service—he assists his trainer in teaching younger swimmers, sharing his knowledge and inspiring the next generation. Even with rigorous training, Jasper does not neglect his studies. Ranked among the top eight in his class, he dreams of becoming a teacher, motivated by a desire to help his family and serve as a positive example for his peers.
“Gusto ko pong magtapos sa pag-aaral para matulungan ko po ang pamilya ko at maging huwaran din sa iba pang mga kabataan (I want to finish my studies so I can help my family and be a good role model for other children),” he shares, reflecting the core values nurtured by the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps).
Indeed, Jasper’s story is part of a larger narrative of success among 4Ps beneficiaries in Torrijos. At the Provincial Meet in 2025, several young athletes from the program showcased their skills and determination, earning medals in swimming, arnis, taekwondo, and athletics. Their achievements are credited to hard work, discipline, and determination, proving that 4Ps beneficiaries can excel academically and athletically when given the right support and opportunities.
For Jasper, the program’s support is more than financial assistance—it is a lifeline that fuels both his education and his sports pursuits. The discipline he honed in swimming translates to his studies, and his dream of becoming a teacher mirrors the program’s vision of nurturing empowered, responsible youth.
Jasper Fidelino is more than a swimmer; he is a symbol of hope. Each dive into the waters of Torrijos is a step toward a future he envisions—not just for himself, but for his family, his community, and the next generation of young dreamers. With the foundation laid by 4Ps, Jasper continues to glide, stroke by stroke, toward a horizon filled with possibilities.
