RIZAL, Occidental Mindoro – A community association in Barangay Malawaan is taking a significant step toward economic self-sufficiency following the launch of a Meat and Fish Processing Enterprise supported by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Field Office MIMAROPA through its Sustainable Livelihood Program (SLP).

The Malawaan Matabiaga Sustainable Livelihood Program Association (SLPA) formally unveiled the project on June 15, 2026, marking the start of a community-driven enterprise made possible through a ₱900,000 Sustainable Livelihood Program grant.

The initiative seeks to transform locally available resources into marketable products while creating income-generating opportunities for association members. By engaging in meat and fish processing, the organization aims to establish a sustainable enterprise that will help improve household incomes and strengthen the local economy.

Present during the launching activity were DSWD-SLP personnel Project Development Officer Arris Jay Mamungay and Municipal Link Lucy Estonactor, together with local government and barangay officials who expressed their support for the association’s new venture.

For members of the association, the project represents more than financial assistance—it symbolizes a pathway toward greater economic independence and community resilience.

DSWD Field Office MIMAROPA Regional Director Benchie B. Gonzales emphasized that livelihood interventions are designed to empower communities by providing opportunities for growth and long-term sustainability.

“DSWD is committed to supporting community-based livelihood projects that create opportunities, strengthen organizations, and improve the well-being of families. Through initiatives such as this, we help communities build productive enterprises that can generate lasting benefits for their members,” Director Gonzales said.

The project highlights the Sustainable Livelihood Program’s continuing efforts to help vulnerable and marginalized sectors move toward self-reliance by strengthening their capacity to manage and sustain community enterprises. As the Malawaan Matabiaga SLPA begins operations, the association is expected to contribute not only to the economic development of Barangay Malawaan but also to the broader goal of building resilient communities capable of creating their own opportunities for growth.
