For Daisy Rodriguez Gonzales of Barangay Tagum, Santa Cruz, Marinduque, life has never been defined by the hardships she faced, but by the courage with which she confronted them. When the Gonzales family became beneficiaries of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program in 2012, they had very little to call their own. Daisy and her husband, Javier, lived in a modest hut entrusted to them by her parents. Javier worked as a fisherman and a Job Order driver for the local government, earning an income that was often uncertain and barely enough to sustain their growing family.

But while their resources were limited, their determination knew no bounds.

Daisy refused to allow poverty to dictate her family’s future. She accompanied her husband on fishing trips, cultivated vegetables for additional income, managed a small store, and maximized every opportunity available to them. Every peso earned was carefully budgeted. Every grant received through 4Ps was invested wisely, not merely to survive another day, but to build a better tomorrow.

Their sacrifices gradually transformed into progress.

Today, the Gonzales family has attained a Social Welfare and Development Indicator (SWDI) Level 3 – Self-Sufficient, a remarkable milestone that reflects years of perseverance, responsible financial management, and unwavering commitment to self-improvement.

Yet the family’s greatest investment was never material wealth… it was education.

Despite financial constraints, Daisy and Javier remained steadfast in ensuring that all six of their children stayed in school. Their commitment has already borne remarkable fruit. Their eldest daughter, Tricia Joy, earned a degree in Political Science and is now gainfully employed. Their son, Christian Dave, completed Industrial Engineering with a specialization in Mechanical Engineering and has likewise entered the workforce. Their younger children continue pursuing higher education and basic schooling, carrying forward the family’s dream of breaking the cycle of poverty through learning.

Their journey, however, was far from smooth.

At one point, Christian Dave’s severe asthma required frequent hospitalization, placing enormous emotional and financial strain on the family. Just as they struggled to recover, another tragedy struck when Javier suffered a stroke that temporarily robbed him of his ability to work.

For many families, these setbacks could have marked the end of their progress.

For the Gonzales family, they became defining moments.

Daisy emerged as the family’s unwavering pillar of strength. She assumed the dual role of mother and father, cared for her husband during his recovery, looked after her son’s medical needs, continued earning a living, and ensured that none of her children’s education would be sacrificed despite their circumstances.

The values they learned through the Family Development Sessions (FDS), responsible parenthood, financial management, health, nutrition, and family solidarity, became practical lessons that guided their daily decisions and strengthened their resolve during life’s most difficult seasons.

As the Gonzales family rose from vulnerability to self-sufficiency, Daisy embraced a greater purpose.

She realized that genuine success carries the responsibility to uplift others.

For seven years, she faithfully served as a 4Ps Parent Leader, becoming a dependable bridge between beneficiaries and government services. Her dedication, compassion, and integrity earned the trust of her fellow community members, eventually leading to her election as Barangay Kagawad, a position she honorably held for three consecutive terms spanning nine years.

In public service, Daisy became known not for holding a position, but for making herself available whenever her community needed her most.

Whether responding during calamities, assisting vulnerable families in accessing medical, educational, and financial support, or partnering with DSWD and the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office in seminars, trainings, and community development activities, she consistently demonstrated servant leadership rooted in compassion and integrity.

Her influence reaches far beyond public office.

The Gonzales children actively participate in school and community initiatives, reflecting the values their parents have instilled in them… discipline, volunteerism, respect, and compassion. Together, they exemplify a family whose success is measured not only by personal achievements, but by the positive impact they create for others.
