In a world filled with uncertainties and challenges, stories of resilience and transformation shine brightly, offering hope and inspiration.

This is the story of Marilyn M. Martirez, a mother of five who, through unwavering determination and support, transformed her family’s life, became a community leader, and pursued her dream of education against all odds.

Marilyn and her family fought, endured, and pursued their dreams despite life’s challenges. She had shared their journey with a few but never imagined she would share it with everyone. She wants to share the significant changes in her family, community, and herself since they were registered in the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) about 15 years ago hoping their story inspires those facing their own trials and tribulations.

“When we started our small family, we faced numerous challenges. Without a steady income, limited opportunities, and no place of our own, life was tough. Yet, we lived happily, with dreams of a better future,” said Marilyn.

Her husband, a farmer and laborer, was a great provider, and they vowed to give their children the opportunities they never had.

In 2008, their lives changed with the introduction of the Pantawid Pamilya, which Marilyn considers the greatest blessing they ever received.

“Through 4Ps, we could enroll our children in school without worrying about educational expenses,” Marilyn admitted.

With the program’s financial support, they gradually built their own home. However, in 2014, her husband passed away from Acute Hemorrhagic Pancreatitis. As a single parent, Marilyn had to be strong for her children, and with the help of various government aids and community projects, they persevered.

Marilyn and her children, dressed in red, embody love and boldness as they celebrate their journey together.

Her eldest child, Khenny, completed a Bachelor of Elementary Education and now works in Taguig. Her second child, Claude, pursued a Welding Vocational Course in TESDA and is now practicing his chosen field in Japan. Her third child, Mouline, also a TESDA graduate, works as a welder in Makati. Her two youngest children are still in school, with bright futures ahead.

Despite the loss and challenges, they continued to develop their home and support each other. Social welfare assistance has significantly improved their standard of living.

Being a Pantawid Pamilya Parent Leader since 2008 has transformed Marilyn’s relationship with the community and became more involved in serving others. She volunteered as a Barangay Nutrition Scholar, campaigning against malnutrition and providing health services in remote areas. And in 2013, she was elected as a Barangay Councilor.

“Despite my personal tragedy, I found motivation in helping others. Serving my community became a way to channel my pain into something positive,” Marilyn added. She learned that true leadership is about creating a nurturing environment where everyone feels valued and empowered.

Marilyn participates in a DSWD training activity, continuously seeking growth and community betterment.

For ten years, she served as a leader, contributing to programs and services that promote community welfare. Marilyn led various initiatives, from health campaigns to community safety projects. She also organized an association for the Mangyan community, training them in bamboo crafting, which became a source of livelihood for many families.

“Balancing motherhood and community work was challenging. As a single mother, I dedicated my time to improving as a mother and community worker. Through the lessons learned from Family Development Sessions and other programs, I realized the importance of self-care,” Marilyn said.

With the support of her children, Marilyn pursued her college education through a government scholarship, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Grace Mission College in 2024 at the age of 49. Reflecting on her journey, she is amazed by how far they’ve come.

Now, we can see the brighter future ahead of us. While I acknowledge that I’m not materially well-off, I consider myself rich in experiences, knowledge, and, most importantly, positive interpersonal relationships. Success, to me, means enriching life with significant purpose rather than pursuing wealth or position,” Marilyn proudly added.

Their story is a testament to the power of resilience and the impact of government support. Success is not about wealth or position but enriching life with purpose and positive relationships.

“If there’s one thing I want to emphasize to my fellow beneficiaries, it’s the importance of valuing the government assistance we receive. Not everyone has the same opportunities as us, so let’s continue striving to improve and reach higher goals and take responsibility for our own well-being and actively work towards its enhancement,” Marilyn encourages fellow beneficiaries.

Marilyn Martirez is a testament to resilience and the pursuit of education against all challenges.

From her humble beginnings as a struggling single mother to becoming a leader in her community, she has shown that with determination and support, one can transcend hardships and achieve transformation.

Her story inspires us all to embrace challenges as opportunities for growth, and her legacy continues to uplift and inspire those facing their own adversities. ###
